National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery sits in the Parliamentary Triangle. The building responds to its site by connecting key vistas, levels and alignments around the precinct. Five fingers of space, arranged perpendicular to the Land Axis, refer to Griffin’s early planning concepts for the National Capital.

This project exemplifies how a collaborative design process and dedicated design team can deliver an exceptional low-energy building. The building has been awarded 25 times across all disciplines including architecture, engineering, lighting, construction, materials, interior design, tourism and sustainable design.

Steensen Varming provided mechanical engineering, lighting design, sustainable design and electrical engineering services on the highly collaborative project.
